Almost certainly no. The average CAF application takes about 250 days (roughly 8 months). Silence does not mean rejection. You have NOT been rejected unless you receive a formal written rejection.

A large proportion of forms are returned on first submission. Here's how to get it right:

  • Section 1 (Personal Info): Full legal name exactly as on your birth certificate. Every name you've ever used.
  • Section 2 (Addresses): Every address for the past 10 years — including university dorms, temporary stays, and parents' homes. Exact dates. If you're unsure of a date, write your best estimate and note "approximate."
  • Section 3 (Employment): Every employer including part-time and seasonal. Full company name, address, supervisor name. Gaps between jobs must be explained.
  • Section 4 (Travel): Every country visited, exact dates, purpose. This is where most people forget trips. Check your passport stamps and credit card statements.
  • Section 5 (References): People who have known you well for 5+ years. NOT family. Warn them they may be contacted.
💡Never leave a field blank — write "N/A" if not applicable. A blank field = an error = your form gets returned. Possibly yes. The CAF updated its Common Enrolment Medical Standard in 2024. Conditions now frequently accepted include:

  • ADHD: Accepted if stable, managed (with or without medication), and you can demonstrate focus in structured environments
  • Anxiety/Depression: Accepted if stable for 12+ months, documented treatment history, no recent hospitalizations
  • Asthma: Accepted if controlled, no recent ER visits. Bring pulmonary function test results.
  • Allergies: Most accepted. Severe anaphylaxis cases are assessed individually — bring your EpiPen prescription history.

What to bring to your medical exam: Complete prescription history (pharmacy printout), specialist letters confirming stability, any recent test results (bloodwork, pulmonary function, psychological assessments). The more documentation showing stable management, the stronger your case.

💡The #1 disqualifiér is dishonesty, not the condition. Declare everything. Medical staff review your records against pharmacy databases — omissions will be caught and are far worse than the condition itself.Le facteur #1 de disqualification est la malhonnêtete, pas la condition.   • Prepare your family — Limited phone for 10+ weeks. MFRC can help before enrolment

A record does not automatically disqualify you. Each case assessed individually — severity, recency, pardons/record suspensions all factor in. Some offences are absolute bars (serious violent/sexual). The single most important rule: declare everything honestly. Concealing a record is far more likely to disqualify you than the record itself.

  • Age: 16 Reserve (parental consent), 17 Reg Force. No strict upper limit.
  • Citizenship: Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

The CAF significantly relaxed its appearance policy. Visible tattoos now generally permitted. Face/neck/scalp restrictions remain in some contexts. One pair of small earrings in uniform. Many tattooed people assume they can't join — most can.

Glasses/contacts fine for most trades. Some require full colour vision (pilots, maritime officers). CAF may fund PRK surgery for certain operational trades. Always declare actual vision honestly.

Votre choix de métier determine largement votre environnement.

Since December 31, 2024, all new members serve a probationary period. Your conduct and values are assessed. Treat it seriously.

This is the single most important décision you'll make in the application process. Your trade determines your daily life, your base locations, your career trajectory, and how much you enjoy (or hate) your time in the CAF. Here's what nobody tells you:

How trade selection actually works:

  • Your CFAT score limits your options. The aptitude test results determine which trades you're eligible for. A higher score = more choices. If your top trade requires a score you didn't hit, you can retake the CFAT after a waiting period.
  • You list your top 3 trade choices on your application. The CAF tries to match you but there's no guarantee. If your first choice has a long waitlist and your third choice needs people now, you may get offered your third choice.
  • Some trades enrol FAST (critical trades with signing bonuses — up to $50,000). Others have 1-2 year waitlists. Ask your recruiter which trades are "in demand" right now.
  • You CAN say no to a trade offer and wait for your preferred trade. But this means staying in the queue longer.

Three categories of trades:

  • Combat trades (Infantry, Armour, Artillery, Combat Engineer) — Field-heavy. Physically demanding. Lots of time outdoors. Fastest route to deployment. Based at Army bases: Petawawa, Edmonton, Valcartier, Gagetown, Shilo.
  • Technical trades (Vehicle Tech, AVN Tech, Marine Tech, Signals, IT) — Workshop/hangar environment. Longer trade training (6-12+ months). Skills transfer well to civilian careers. In high demand.
  • Support trades (Supply Tech, Admin Clerk, Cook, Medical Tech, MP) — Keep the machine running. Available at every base. Some of the most stable posting locations. Supply and Admin are on every base in Canada.

What most people get wrong:

  • "I want to be infantry" — Do you actually know what infantry does day-to-day? It's not what movies show. Talk to someone who serves.
  • "I'll pick whatever gets me in fastest" — You'll spend YEARS in this trade. Don't rush the décision to save 3 months of waiting.
  • "My friend says [trade] is the best" — What's best for your friend isn't what's best for you. Consider: Do you want to work with your hands? With people? With technology? Outdoors? In an office?
💡Before you decide: Go to forces.ca/careers and read the FULL description. Then ask your recruiter these exact questions: (1) What is the current wait time for this trade? (2) What does a typical day look like at the unit? (3) Are there signing bonuses for this trade right now? (4) What's the training pipeline timeline? Also check r/CanadianForces on Reddit and Army.ca forums — serving members answer trade questions honestly there of every trade you're considering. Watch the videos. Then ask your recruiter: "What does daily life actually look like in this trade?" If you pick wrong, you CAN change later through a Voluntary Occupation Transfer (VOT) — but it takes 1-2 years and resets your trade qualification. Pick carefully the first time.   • Certains métiers enrolent VITE (métiers critiques avec primes — jusqu'a 50 000 $). D'autres ont des listes d'attente de 1-2 ans.
  • Vous POUVEZ refusér une offre et attendre votre métier prefere. Mais cela signifie attendre plus longtemps.

Trois categories de métiers :

  • Metiers de combat (Infanterie, Blinde, Artillerie, Genie de combat) — Beaucoup de terrain. Physiquement exigeant. Route la plus rapide vers le déploiement.
  • Metiers techniques (Tech vehicule, Tech aviation, Tech marine, Transmissions, TI) — Ateliers/hangars. Formation plus longue. Competences transferables au civil. En forte demande.
  • Metiers de soutien (Tech approvisionnement, Commis admin, Cuisinier, Tech medical, PM) — Disponibles a chaque base. Emplacements de mutation plus stables.

Ce que la plupart des gens font mal :

  • « Je veux etre fantassin » — Savez-vous vraiment ce que l'infanterie fait au quotidien?
  • « Je vais choisir ce qui m'enrole le plus vite » — Vous passerez des ANNEES dans ce métier. Ne precipitez pas la décision.
  • « Mon ami dit que [métier] est le meilleur » — Ce qui est bon pour votre ami n'est pas forcement bon pour vous.

What to expect at Basic Military Qualification

Week-by-week reality:

  • Weeks 1–2: The hardest. Your day starts at 5 AM. Sleep deprivation, constant correction, homesickness. You'll question everything. This is by design — it breaks civilian habits and builds team cohesion. No family visits for the first 4 weeks. Almost everyone who survives week 2 finishes BMQ.
  • Weeks 3–5: You start getting it. Drill becomes automatic. You learn weapons handling (C7A2 service rifle), first aid, CAF values and ethics. Phone access begins (limited). Family visits allowed after week 4.
  • Week 6: FORCE fitness test — you must pass to continue. You'll have had weeks of PT to prepare. Start training before you arrive.
  • Weeks 7–9: Field exercises, section attacks, final assessments, graduation prep. You can feel the finish line.

What to bring: Follow your joining instructions EXACTLY. Personal hygiene items, prescription medications, small amount of cash, ID. Do NOT bring: excessive civilian clothes, valuables, large electronics.

Phone access: None in week 1. Limited after that — typically 15-30 min a few times per week. Tell your family before you leave — they should not panic if they can't reach you. Access increases as training progresses.

Pay during BMQ: You earn $4,337–$5,484/month as a new recruit during training. You are paid from day one.

Semaine par semaine :

  • Semaines 1–2 : Les plus difficiles. Votre journee commence a 5 h. Manque de sommeil, corrections constantes, ennui du foyer. Aucune visite familiale les 4 premières semaines.

  • Semaines 7–9 : Exercices en campagne, attaques de section, évaluations finales, préparation de la graduation.

Quoi apporter : Suivez les instructions EXACTEMENT. Hygiene personnelle, medicaments, argent comptant, ID.

Telephone : Aucun la semaine 1. Limite apres — 15-30 min quelques fois par semaine. Prevenez votre famille — ils ne doivent pas paniquer s'ils ne peuvent pas vous joindre.

Solde pendant la QMB : Vous gagnez 4 337 $–5 484 $/mois comme nouvelle recrue. Vous etes paye des le jour 1.

You are not trapped. Voluntary release is possible but discouraged early on. If you fail a component: may be recoursed. Talk to your Platoon Warrant first.

💡The overwhelming majority who want to quit in week 1–2 are glad they stayed by week 6.La grande majorite qui veut partir en semaine 1–2 est contente d'etre restee a la semaine 6.

BMQ (Basic Military Qualification) is the entry-level training every CAF member must complete. 9 weeks (BMOQ is 12 weeks for officers). Training locations: CAFLRS in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec (primary) and CFB Borden, Ontario (Delta Division — expanded in 2025). Reserve BMQ: weekends or a condensed 2-month summer block. $10,000 completion bonus available for certain eligible trades.

La QMB (Qualification militaire de base) est la formation initiale obligatoire. 9 semaines (QMBO est 12 semaines pour les officiers). Lieux de formation : ELRFC a Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec (principal) et BFC Borden, Ontario (Division Delta — elargie en 2025). QMB de la Reserve : fins de semaine ou bloc estival de 2 mois. Prime de 10 000 $ a la completion pour certains métiers admissibles.

Universal fitness standard. 4 components: Sandbag Lift (20 kg), Loaded Shuttles (20 kg/20 m), 20m Rushes, Sandbag Drag (20 kg). Minimum is achievable with basic fitness. Retaken annually.

Injury does NOT mean automatic release. You may be placed on Duty with Limitations (DwL). Extended recovery: rehab/holding platoon. Medical Employment Limitations (MELs) document your restrictions. Don't hide injuries. Most recover and complete their course.

Trade training (DP1). Duration: combat arms 3–4 months, tech trades 6–12+ months. You're paid throughout. Key locations: CFB Borden, Gagetown, Esquimalt/Halifax. PAT platoon wait is normal — use the time. After: posted to your first operational unit for OJT.

Go to your Orderly Room immédiately. Bring: your last 3 pay statements, a written description of the discrepancy, and your member number. Ask for the Pay Clerk or Compensation & Benefits Administrator. If OR can't fix it: request a pay query through your chain of command. For unresolved issues: formal grievance within 90 days per QR&O 7.09. Keep copies of everything.

  • What it is: You live at your new posting location; your family stays at the previous one. The CAF covers your accommodation at the new location (Crown quarters, hotel, or rental allowance).
  • Valid reasons: Children mid-school year (especially Grade 12), spouse's employment that can't transfer, ongoing medical treatment for a family member, home that can't sell in the current market.
  • How to apply: Submit a CF memo through your chain of command to your CO as soon as you receive your posting message — don't wait. Include: the specific reason, supporting documents (school enrollment letters, spouse employment contract, medical referral letters), and proposed duration.
  • What you receive: Accommodation at your new location + rations (or meal allowance) + one return trip per month to visit family.
  • Duration: Typically approved in 1-year increments. Renewable but requires fresh justification each time. After 2+ years, expect harder scrutiny.
  • What gets denied: Vague reasons ("we just don't want to move"), no supporting documentation, applying after you've already moved your family.

From the moment you enrol, you are subject to military law 24/7. This is not figurative. The National Defence Act applies whether you are on duty, off duty, on leave, or on the other side of the country. Here are common charges new members don't expect:

  • Absent Without Leave (s.90 NDA): Missing a parade, showing up late to your unit, not returning from leave on time. This is the most common charge. Even 1 hour late can technically be AWOL.
  • Insubordination (s.85 NDA): Refusing or failing to comply with a lawful command from a superior. "I didn't hear the order" won't save you. "I disagreed with the order" is worse.
  • Drunkenness (s.97 NDA): Being impaired to the point of being unfit for duty OR bringing discredit to the CAF. This applies off-base, on weekends, even on leave if your behaviour is bad enough.
  • Conduct to the prejudice of good order (s.129 NDA): The catch-all. Covers anything that undermines discipline or brings discredit. Social media posts, bar fights, disrespectful behaviour — all captured here.

How it works: Minor offences go to a Summary Trial before your CO — quick, limited penalties (fines, extra duties, reprimand). Serious offences go to Court Martial — a military court with a judge, potentially imprisonment. You have the right to consult a military defence lawyer (free) before any trial.

Occupational Transfer (OT/VOT) — the real process:

  • Eligibility: CFAT score must meet the new trade's threshold (your recruiter-era score is on file — check with your OR). Medical category must match. Generally need DP1 complete and 2+ years in current trade.
  • Timeline: Submit OT request to your Career Manager. CO must formally endorse (or not oppose). The OT board reviews applications annually — submit by October for the next fiscal year cycle. Decision: 3-6 months after submission.
  • What CMs look for: Strong PERs in your current trade, a clear reason for the change (not just "I'm bored"), and that you've researched the new trade thoroughly.
  • What happens if approved: You'll be posted to a training establishment to complete DP1 in the new trade. Your rank stays but your trade qualification resets — you're a qualifiéd Corporal who is now an untrained Corporal in a new job. Pay stays at current rank level.
  • When NOT to apply: If you're about to be promoted, if your PERs are weak (fix that first), or if you haven't completed your minimum obligatory service in your current trade.
💡Before applying: call someone in the new trade. Ask what daily life actually looks like. The CAF pension is one of the best in Canada. Here's how it works:

  • You contribute from day one. A percentage of your pay goes into the pension fund automatically.
  • The formula: 2% × years of service × average of your best 5 years of salary. So 25 years = 50% of your salary for life.
  • Under 2 years service: You get your contributions refunded if you leave.
  • 2-25 years: You choose between a transfer value (lump sum moved to your RRSP) or a deferred pension starting at age 60.
  • 25+ years: Immediate annuity — you collect your pension right away upon release. This is the gold standard.
  • Bridge benefit: Until age 65, you receive an extra amount that bridges the gap before CPP/OAS kicks in.

Voluntary Release (Item 3b) — step by step:

  1. Talk to your chain of command first. Your supervisor, then your CO. This is courtesy and process — they may have options you haven't considéréd (OT, posting change, leave).
  2. Visit your Orderly Room. Request the voluntary release paperwork. You'll submit a CF memo to your CO stating your intent.
  3. Notice period: Typically 6 months from memo submission. Can sometimes be shortened to 3-4 months if your CO approves and there's no operational impact. During ROTP or subsidized education: return-of-service obligation may apply — you could owe time or money.
  4. During notice period: Register for My VAC Account immédiately. Attend a SCAN seminar (career transition). Contact the CAF Transition Group. Book a SISIP Financial exit session.
  5. Medical: Get every injury and condition documented BEFORE release. File a VAC disability claim for any service-related condition. This is much harder to do after release.
  6. Release day: Return all kit and equipment. Collect your pension transfer options package. Your final pay includes any owed leave and allowances.

Pension: If you served 2+ years, you have pension entitlements. Under 2 years: you get your contributions back. 2-25 years: options include transfer value or deferred pension at age 60. 25+ years: immédiate annuity. Consult SISIP Financial — these décisions are irreversible.

Communication timeline:

  • Week 1: Little to no phone access. Your child is adjusting. Do not panic if you don't hear from them.
  • Weeks 2-4: Limited phone access — typically 15-30 minutes, a few times per week. Earned through good conduct and performance.
  • After week 4: Phone access increases. Family visits are allowed after the first 4 weeks.
  • Weeks 5-9: More regular contact. Field exercise weeks may have reduced access.

Care packages: Yes, you can send mail and care packages. Keep them reasonable — their living space is small and inspected. Good items: letters (they LOVE getting mail), non-perishable snacks, photos, stamps. Avoid: large items, anything that could be considered contraband, excessive amounts of food.

Graduation: You are invited to attend BMQ graduation. It's a significant ceremony. Your child will be in uniform, marching with their platoon. Be there if you can — it means the world to them.

Calendrier de communication :

First: take a breath. Your feelings are valid — worry, pride, confusion, fear. Every military parent feels them. Now let's talk about what this actually means. The CAF is a real career with real benefits: The CAF is one of Canada's largest employers. Your child will receive:

  • Paid training from day one — $4,337-$5,484/month during BMQ. They don't pay for training, the military pays THEM.
  • Full health, dental, and vision coverage — for them and eventually their dependents
  • One of the best pension plans in Canada — 2% per year of service. 25 years = 50% of salary for life.
  • Education support — ILP ($2,000/year while serving), ROTP (full university paid), ETB (up to $85,764 after release)
  • 100+ career options — from cybersecurity to medicine to mechanics to intelligence. This isn't just "infantry."
  • Job security — in an uncertain economy, the CAF is hiring. They're 14,000 members short and actively recruiting.

If they're under 18: You must provide written parental consent for enrolment. The minimum age is 16 for Reserve, 17 for Regular Force.

Yes. BMQ is demanding — physically, mentally, and emotionally — but it is NOT designed to break people. The instructors' goal is to build them up, mentor them, help them find their inner strength, and teach them to succeed.

  • Medical staff are on-site 24/7. If your child gets hurt or sick, there are trained medical professionals and facilities immediately available. Local hospitals in the Montreal region are nearby for serious issues.
  • The physical test (FORCE) isn't until week 6. They have weeks of progressive physical training to prepare. The minimum standard is achievable with basic fitness.
  • If they're injured, they go to medical — they're NOT automatically released. Recovery support, rehab platoons, and Duty with Limitations exist to help them complete training.
  • Mental health support is available. Padres (military chaplains), medical officers, and peer support are all accessible during BMQ.
💡The first 2 weeks are the hardest by design. Your child may call you sounding exhausted, emotional, or wanting to quit. This is completely normal. Almost everyone who makes it through week 2 finishes BMQ. Be their anchor.Les 2 premières semaines sont les plus difficiles par conception. After BMQ, they go to trade training. The location depends on their trade:

  • CFB Borden, ON — Most support and technical trades (supply, admin, medical, IT)
  • CFB Gagetown, NB — Army combat trades (infantry, armour, artillery, engineer)
  • CFB Esquimalt, BC or Halifax, NS — Navy trades
  • Various bases — Some specialized trades train at specific locations

For Army trades, there's a second phase called BMQ-Land (~4-5 weeks at CFB Gagetown) before trade training. Trade training then lasts 3-12+ months depending on the trade. They are paid throughout. After trade training, they receive a posting message to their first operational unit — this could be anywhere in Canada.

The honest reality: Your child may end up across the country from you. The CAF posts people where they're needed, not where their family lives. This is one of the hardest parts of military life for families. But the CAF covers all moving costs, and the MFRC at every base helps families transition.

💡If your child joined the Reserve Force, they stay in your home city with their local unit. No postings. This is one of the biggest différences between Regular and Reserve Force.Si votre enfant a joint la Force de reserve, il reste dans votre ville avec son unite locale. Pas de mutations.

Yes — 100% real military. Same uniform. Same rank structure. Same training standards. Same oath. The différence: you serve part-time while keeping your civilian job, school, or life. You train one evening per week, one weekend per month, and participate in summer training. Reservists also deploy on domestic operations — when floods, fires, or ice storms hit your community, you could be called up to help your neighbours through Op LENTUS. There are approximately 30,000 Primary Reserve members across Canada.

The Reserve is ideal for: students (earn while you learn, education reimbursement up to $8,000). Full-Time Summer Employment (FTSE): guaranteed paid full-time summer work every year doing courses and training — the best summer job a university student can get, people with civilian careers who want to serve without giving up their job, parents who need to stay in one city, and anyone who wants to try military life before committing full-time.

💡You can join a Reserve unit in your home city. Unlike Regular Force, you are NOT posted — you stay where you are.
💡What if I miss a parade night? Missing occasionally is fine — just communicate with your chain of command in advance. Chronic non-attendance can lead to being placed on Non-Effective Strength (NES). Vous vous entraînez un soir par semaine, une fin de semaine par mois et participez à l'entraînement d'été. Les réservistes sont aussi déployés lors d'opérations intérieures — inondations, feux de forêt, tempêtes de verglas (Op LENTUS) et participez a l'entrainement d'ete. Il y a environ 30 000 réservistes primaires a travers le Canada.

La Reserve est ideale pour : les etudiants (gagnez en apprenant, remboursement d'etudes jusqu'a 8 000 $), les professionnels qui veulent servir sans quitter leur emploi, les parents qui doivent rester dans une ville, et quiconque veut essayer la vie militaire avant de s'engager a temps plein.

Reserve pay is a daily rate based on your rank. Approximate 2025-26 Class A daily rates:

  • Private (Basic): ~$130/day
  • Private (Trained): ~$165/day
  • Corporal: ~$195/day

If you parade one evening per week (~4 hours = half day pay) and one weekend per month (2 full days), that's roughly $700-900/month as a trained Private. Not a living wage — but it's tax-advantaged income ON TOP of your civilian job.

Additional Reserve benefits:

  • Education reimbursement: Up to $2,000/year, $8,000 maximum — the CAF helps pay for your degree while you serve part-time
  • Class B/C contracts: When on full-time contracts, you earn the equivalent of a Reg Force monthly salary
  • No signing bonus (unlike Reg Force critical trades with up to $50K)

Reserve BMQ is NOT 9 weeks at Saint-Jean. You do it with your local unit, on weekends:

  • Format: 10-11 training weekends over 3-4 months (typically September to April, or January to June)
  • Schedule: Friday evening (half day) + Saturday (full day) + Sunday (full day) = 1 training weekend
  • Frequency: 2-3 weekends per month. You keep your regular life in between.
  • Location: Your local Reserve unit — NOT Saint-Jean (unless you choose the full-time summer option)
  • Alternative: Some units offer a condensed 2-month full-time summer BMQ block (similar to Reg Force but at your local brigade training area)
  • Content: Same as Regular Force BMQ — drill, weapons handling (C7A2), first aid, field craft, FORCE test. Same standards.
  • Total training days: 22 days (same as Reg Force, just spread over weekends)
💡You keep your job and your life while doing BMQ. You go home after each training weekend. Your family isn't separated from you for 9 weeks. This is the single biggest advantage of Reserve BMQ.Vous gardez votre emploi et votre vie pendant la QMB. Vous rentrez chez vous apres chaque fin de semaine d'entrainement. This is the most confusing part of Reserve life. Here's the simple version:

  • Class A = Your regular part-time service. Parade nights (1 evening/week), weekend exercises (1/month), and the occasional task. You're paid a daily rate ONLY for days you work. Maximum 12 consecutive days. This is where most Reservists spend most of their time.
  • Class B = Temporary full-time contract. 13+ consecutive days. Used for summer courses, staff positions, or special projects. You get paid the equivalent of a Reg Force monthly salary. If your contract is 180+ days, you get full benefits including SISIP.
  • Class C = Operational deployment. You're essentially a Reg Force member for the duration. Same pay, same benefits, same SISIP, same pension contributions. Deployments are voluntary — you choose to go. Typically 6+ months.
💡The key thing nobody tells you: Class A gives you almost NO benefits beyond pay. Class B under 180 days gives you some. Class B over 180 days and Class C give you FULL benefits. This depends entirely on your class of service:

  • Class A (part-time): Pay for days worked. Limited medical/dental during training periods. NO automatic SISIP/LTD. Reserve Force Pension Plan (you qualify once you earn ~$7,000/year — most active Reservists hit this). Education reimbursement ($2K/year). Civilian employer protection. That's essentially it.
  • Class B under 180 days: Same as Class A plus some additional medical coverage during the contract period.
  • Class B 180+ days: NOW you get the good stuff — SISIP/LTD automatic, full health and dental, pension contributions. Essentially Reg Force benefits for the duration.
  • Class C (operations): Full Regular Force benefits package. Same pay, same SISIP, same pension, same everything. You ARE Reg Force for the duration of the deployment.
💡The 180-day threshold is critical. If you're offered a Class B contract, try to get it to 180+ days. The différence in benefits coverage is enormous. Yes — and your Reserve experience gives you a significant advantage. The process is called a Component Transfer (CT). You apply through recruiting, similar to a new application but faster because:

  • Your BMQ qualification transfers — you don't redo basic training
  • Your trade qualifications may transfer (depends on the trade)
  • Your rank and time in rank are recognized
  • Your medical and security screening are already on file

However: it's still competitive. Not guaranteed. Processing can take 12-24 months. Your CO must support the request. The CAF needs people in your chosen trade.

Going the other way (Reg → Reserve): Also possible. But your pension accrual under the Regular Force pension plan stops at the date of transfer. This is a major financial décision — consult SISIP Financial before deciding.

💡Many people join the Reserve first to try military life, then transfer to Regular Force once they're sure. This is a completely valid strategy. You get paid to train, you learn if military life is for you, and if you decide to go full-time, you have a head start over civilian applicants.Beaucoup de gens joignent la Reserve d'abord pour essayer la vie militaire, puis transférént a la Force régulière. Cependant : c'est quand meme concurrentiel. Le traitement peut prendre 6-12 mois.

Dans l'autre sens (Reguliere → Reserve) : Aussi possible. Mais votre accumulation de pension s'arrete au moment du transfert. Consultez les Services financiers du RARM avant de decider.

Yes — your civilian employment is legally protected. Employers cannot fire you, penalize you, or discriminate against you for Reserve service absences. This is protected under:

  • The National Defence Act (federal protection)
  • Provincial Reservist Protection legislation (varies by province — some are stronger than others)
  • The Canadian Human Rights Act

In practice: Most employers are supportive, especially if you give them advance notice. Some employers actively encourage Reserve service. The CAF can provide a letter to your employer explaining your training commitments. If your employer gives you trouble, speak to your chain of command or a JAG officer.

Oui — votre emploi civil est legalement protégé. Les employeurs ne peuvent pas vous congédier ou vous discriminer pour les absences liees au service de la Reserve. Protections :
