- Section 2 (Addresses): Every address for the past 10 years — including university dorms, temporary stays, and parents' homes. Exact dates. If you're unsure of a date, write your best estimate and note "approximate."
- Section 3 (Employment): Every employer including part-time and seasonal. Full company name, address, supervisor name. Gaps between jobs must be explained.
- Section 4 (Travel): Every country visited, exact dates, purpose. This is where most people forget trips. Check your passport stamps and credit card statements.
- Section 5 (References): People who have known you well for 5+ years. NOT family. Warn them they may be contacted.

- ADHD: Accepted if stable, managed (with or without medication), and you can demonstrate focus in structured environments
- Anxiety/Depression: Accepted if stable for 12+ months, documented treatment history, no recent hospitalizations
- Asthma: Accepted if controlled, no recent ER visits. Bring pulmonary function test results.
- Allergies: Most accepted. Severe anaphylaxis cases are assessed individually — bring your EpiPen prescription history.
What to bring to your medical exam: Complete prescription history (pharmacy printout), specialist letters confirming stability, any recent test results (bloodwork, pulmonary function, psychological assessments). The more documentation showing stable management, the stronger your case.

A record does not automatically disqualify you. Each case assessed individually — severity, recency, pardons/record suspensions all factor in. Some offences are absolute bars (serious violent/sexual). The single most important rule: declare everything honestly. Concealing a record is far more likely to disqualify you than the record itself.

This is the single most important décision you'll make in the application process. Your trade determines your daily life, your base locations, your career trajectory, and how much you enjoy (or hate) your time in the CAF. Here's what nobody tells you:
How trade selection actually works:
- Your CFAT score limits your options. The aptitude test results determine which trades you're eligible for. A higher score = more choices. If your top trade requires a score you didn't hit, you can retake the CFAT after a waiting period.
- You list your top 3 trade choices on your application. The CAF tries to match you but there's no guarantee. If your first choice has a long waitlist and your third choice needs people now, you may get offered your third choice.
- Some trades enrol FAST (critical trades with signing bonuses — up to $50,000). Others have 1-2 year waitlists. Ask your recruiter which trades are "in demand" right now.
- You CAN say no to a trade offer and wait for your preferred trade. But this means staying in the queue longer.
Three categories of trades:
- Combat trades (Infantry, Armour, Artillery, Combat Engineer) — Field-heavy. Physically demanding. Lots of time outdoors. Fastest route to deployment. Based at Army bases: Petawawa, Edmonton, Valcartier, Gagetown, Shilo.
- Technical trades (Vehicle Tech, AVN Tech, Marine Tech, Signals, IT) — Workshop/hangar environment. Longer trade training (6-12+ months). Skills transfer well to civilian careers. In high demand.
- Support trades (Supply Tech, Admin Clerk, Cook, Medical Tech, MP) — Keep the machine running. Available at every base. Some of the most stable posting locations. Supply and Admin are on every base in Canada.
What most people get wrong:
- "I want to be infantry" — Do you actually know what infantry does day-to-day? It's not what movies show. Talk to someone who serves.
- "I'll pick whatever gets me in fastest" — You'll spend YEARS in this trade. Don't rush the décision to save 3 months of waiting.
- "My friend says [trade] is the best" — What's best for your friend isn't what's best for you. Consider: Do you want to work with your hands? With people? With technology? Outdoors? In an office?

Week-by-week reality:
- Weeks 1–2: The hardest. Your day starts at 5 AM. Sleep deprivation, constant correction, homesickness. You'll question everything. This is by design — it breaks civilian habits and builds team cohesion. No family visits for the first 4 weeks. Almost everyone who survives week 2 finishes BMQ.
- Weeks 3–5: You start getting it. Drill becomes automatic. You learn weapons handling (C7A2 service rifle), first aid, CAF values and ethics. Phone access begins (limited). Family visits allowed after week 4.
- Week 6: FORCE fitness test — you must pass to continue. You'll have had weeks of PT to prepare. Start training before you arrive.
- Weeks 7–9: Field exercises, section attacks, final assessments, graduation prep. You can feel the finish line.
What to bring: Follow your joining instructions EXACTLY. Personal hygiene items, prescription medications, small amount of cash, ID. Do NOT bring: excessive civilian clothes, valuables, large electronics.
Phone access: None in week 1. Limited after that — typically 15-30 min a few times per week. Tell your family before you leave — they should not panic if they can't reach you. Access increases as training progresses.
Pay during BMQ: You earn $4,337–$5,484/month as a new recruit during training. You are paid from day one.
Semaine par semaine :

You are not trapped. Voluntary release is possible but discouraged early on. If you fail a component: may be recoursed. Talk to your Platoon Warrant first.

BMQ (Basic Military Qualification) is the entry-level training every CAF member must complete. 9 weeks (BMOQ is 12 weeks for officers). Training locations: CAFLRS in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec (primary) and CFB Borden, Ontario (Delta Division — expanded in 2025). Reserve BMQ: weekends or a condensed 2-month summer block. $10,000 completion bonus available for certain eligible trades.

Imposed Restriction (IR) — what you need to know:
- What it is: You live at your new posting location; your family stays at the previous one. The CAF covers your accommodation at the new location (Crown quarters, hotel, or rental allowance).
- Valid reasons: Children mid-school year (especially Grade 12), spouse's employment that can't transfer, ongoing medical treatment for a family member, home that can't sell in the current market.
- How to apply: Submit a CF memo through your chain of command to your CO as soon as you receive your posting message — don't wait. Include: the specific reason, supporting documents (school enrollment letters, spouse employment contract, medical referral letters), and proposed duration.
- What you receive: Accommodation at your new location + rations (or meal allowance) + one return trip per month to visit family.
- Duration: Typically approved in 1-year increments. Renewable but requires fresh justification each time. After 2+ years, expect harder scrutiny.
- What gets denied: Vague reasons ("we just don't want to move"), no supporting documentation, applying after you've already moved your family.

From the moment you enrol, you are subject to military law 24/7. This is not figurative. The National Defence Act applies whether you are on duty, off duty, on leave, or on the other side of the country. Here are common charges new members don't expect:
- Absent Without Leave (s.90 NDA): Missing a parade, showing up late to your unit, not returning from leave on time. This is the most common charge. Even 1 hour late can technically be AWOL.
- Insubordination (s.85 NDA): Refusing or failing to comply with a lawful command from a superior. "I didn't hear the order" won't save you. "I disagreed with the order" is worse.
- Drunkenness (s.97 NDA): Being impaired to the point of being unfit for duty OR bringing discredit to the CAF. This applies off-base, on weekends, even on leave if your behaviour is bad enough.
- Conduct to the prejudice of good order (s.129 NDA): The catch-all. Covers anything that undermines discipline or brings discredit. Social media posts, bar fights, disrespectful behaviour — all captured here.
How it works: Minor offences go to a Summary Trial before your CO — quick, limited penalties (fines, extra duties, reprimand). Serious offences go to Court Martial — a military court with a judge, potentially imprisonment. You have the right to consult a military defence lawyer (free) before any trial.

Occupational Transfer (OT/VOT) — the real process:
- Eligibility: CFAT score must meet the new trade's threshold (your recruiter-era score is on file — check with your OR). Medical category must match. Generally need DP1 complete and 2+ years in current trade.
- Timeline: Submit OT request to your Career Manager. CO must formally endorse (or not oppose). The OT board reviews applications annually — submit by October for the next fiscal year cycle. Decision: 3-6 months after submission.
- What CMs look for: Strong PERs in your current trade, a clear reason for the change (not just "I'm bored"), and that you've researched the new trade thoroughly.
- What happens if approved: You'll be posted to a training establishment to complete DP1 in the new trade. Your rank stays but your trade qualification resets — you're a qualifiéd Corporal who is now an untrained Corporal in a new job. Pay stays at current rank level.
- When NOT to apply: If you're about to be promoted, if your PERs are weak (fix that first), or if you haven't completed your minimum obligatory service in your current trade.
Réaffectation (RC/VOT) — le vrai processus :

Your release item number has real consequences:
- Item 3b (Voluntary Release): You chose to leave. Full pension entitlements based on years served. Standard VAC benefits. Standard ETB access (6+ yrs). This is the cleanest exit.
- Item 4c (Medical Release): Released because medical conditions are incompatible with continued service. Enhanced benefits: priority VAC disability processing, Enhanced Rehabilitation benefit, possible Earnings Loss Benefit (90% of pre-release salary). Ensure your medical file is complete BEFORE release — document every condition.
- Item 5a (Service no longer required): The CAF initiated your release. Pension entitlements preserved but may affect rehire eligibility.
- Item 5f (Unsuitable for further service — misconduct): Can reduce pension entitlements and affect VAC benefits. Consult JAG immédiately if facing this.

The CAF pension is one of the best in Canada. Here's how it works:
- You contribute from day one. A percentage of your pay goes into the pension fund automatically.
- The formula: 2% × years of service × average of your best 5 years of salary. So 25 years = 50% of your salary for life.
- Under 2 years service: You get your contributions refunded if you leave.
- 2-25 years: You choose between a transfer value (lump sum moved to your RRSP) or a deferred pension starting at age 60.
- 25+ years: Immediate annuity — you collect your pension right away upon release. This is the gold standard.
- Bridge benefit: Until age 65, you receive an extra amount that bridges the gap before CPP/OAS kicks in.

Voluntary Release (Item 3b) — step by step:
- Talk to your chain of command first. Your supervisor, then your CO. This is courtesy and process — they may have options you haven't considéréd (OT, posting change, leave).
- Visit your Orderly Room. Request the voluntary release paperwork. You'll submit a CF memo to your CO stating your intent.
- Notice period: Typically 6 months from memo submission. Can sometimes be shortened to 3-4 months if your CO approves and there's no operational impact. During ROTP or subsidized education: return-of-service obligation may apply — you could owe time or money.
- During notice period: Register for My VAC Account immédiately. Attend a SCAN seminar (career transition). Contact the CAF Transition Group. Book a SISIP Financial exit session.
- Medical: Get every injury and condition documented BEFORE release. File a VAC disability claim for any service-related condition. This is much harder to do after release.
- Release day: Return all kit and equipment. Collect your pension transfer options package. Your final pay includes any owed leave and allowances.
Pension: If you served 2+ years, you have pension entitlements. Under 2 years: you get your contributions back. 2-25 years: options include transfer value or deferred pension at age 60. 25+ years: immédiate annuity. Consult SISIP Financial — these décisions are irreversible.
